testimonies
My name is Francesca Bacchilega, I'm 23 years old, originally from Italy, and I'm a second-year student of the Master.
From September 2023 to January 2024, I spent an exchange semester in Porto, Portugal, attending ISCAP university.
The first difference I noticed when I started this experience was how incredibly foreign friendly the city and the university were. Everybody speaks English, the ISCAP course offer in English is very wide, also among the regular students there are many internationals and the Portuguese students have no problem talking in English to include everybody.
A second aspect that I found remarkable is how informal the relationship with the professors is. You address them by their first names and the courses are almost exclusively seminars where interaction is an essential element that can make up to the 50% of your final grade. This approach encourages debate and critical thinking, values the student's opinions and allows sharing different worldviews. I was genuinely happy to go to class and learning felt incredibly stimulating and fun.
Additionally, I was positively surprised by the excellent organization of the university, the international office and the overall Erasmus experience. All processes went smoothly and every email was answered within a short time.
Needless to say, the Portuguese people are very welcoming, friendly and open-minded. I don't think I remember any negative interaction with a local throughout the semester.
To conclude, I couldn't recommend this country and this university more. I'm very grateful for this experience and I will forever cherish the beautiful memories I've made.
My advice for incoming students is to start looking for housing very early, to ask a local about the city zones before purchasing a transport subscription and to sign up for a Portuguese course.
Thank you for reading and I hope there will be more new Iscapianos from the master in the years to come!
