Guest Speaker: Professor Garry Carnegie (RMIT)
Garry Carnegie, FCPA, CA is an Emeritus Professor of RMIT University, commencing in this honorary role on 1 January 2018, having served in the roles of Head, School of Accounting and Professor of Accounting at RMIT from 2010 to 2017. Subsequently, he served as Education Advisor at CPA Australia during 2018-2019.
Before joining RMIT in 2010, Professor Carnegie had been employed in the Australian higher education sector since 1985 and held full-time professorial posts at Deakin University, Melbourne University Private/The University of Melbourne and University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia). Before joining academe, he gained experience in the IT industry, public accounting services, and in the financial services industry.
During his RMIT Headship, the annual RMIT Accounting Educators Conference was inaugurated and continues to operate. He was a Chief Investigator of the CPA Australia funded research study, published as an e-book, on “Shaping the future of accounting in business education in Australia”.
Since 1993, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, becoming an Associate Editor in 2013. Across a continuous period of 25 years (1995 to 2019), he served as Editor/Joint Editor of Accounting History and, in 2020, was the Consulting Editor. He was recently awarded an Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) Life Membership.
